Kevin Campbell frustrated by inconsistent Everton players, wants clear out

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell is frustrated by the quality and consistency of players at Everton, and wants a “proper clear out” in the summer.

The futures of star players like Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been called into question by the dreadful season, but the pundit feels like the likes of them need to pull their weight as well.

The team is at major risk of relegation from the Premier League and Campbell feels that inconsistency will cause that.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “Will they struggle to keep hold of Richarlison?

“I think it’s going to be vital that if Everton do stay up, which I believe they will but obviously it’s a relegation scrap so anything could happen, to bring in the correct type of players that will make up the [current] players’ minds about what’s going on.

“Richarlison will be thinking, ‘What’s going on at the club?’

“Being in a relegation battle isn’t great, but I think the manager’s got the respect of the players.

“The manager has to do what’s right for the football club, and I think it needs a proper, proper clear out of players who aren’t good enough, aren’t as consistent.

“Some are good players, they’re just not consistent, and it’s not good enough because when they’re not consistent you end up being in a relegation scrap.

“I’ve been around a long time, and when I went there it was only the front two who were young, Franny Jeffers and Danny Cadamarteri, they were the young ones.

“You looked around and there was experience all over the pitch, but now you’re looking at the centre-backs, and the way Tottenham sliced them open [on Monday].

“It’s the reading of the game. You’ve got to know what Tottenham are. They are not a team that’s just going to pass, pass, pass.

“Once they start getting through you, they’re looking to expose you on the counter-attack, and Everton just couldn’t deal with it.

“There’s rumours that players could leave, but some of those players, Dominic Calvert-Lewin for example, he’s struggled for game time because he hasn’t been fit.

“So these guys need to step up, I think Richarlison etc. need to step up to get this team over the line in the league.”

The England striker has been a mystery since he came back form a long injury lay-off, having not found the net all season since scoring in the first three games.

None of the squad’s big names have been on form week-in week-out, with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray outperforming them.

If Frank Lampard can keep them in the Premier League there might be scope to improve the squad, but if not then all bets are off.
