Kevin Campbell: Everton must stay in the Premier League to secure investment

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has pinned hopes for Everton receiving summer investment to replace Alisher Usmanov on staying in the Premier League.

The billionaire’s sponsorship deals were all suspended in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and with the club already walking a tightrope with regards to financial fair play regulations, the situation at the club is perilous.

A relegation to the Championship would be another hammer blow to the club that are currently trying to finance their new stadium.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News on the prospect of new investment Campbell said: “Well you can’t invest at the moment because what are you going to invest in?

“What has to happen is you’ve got to get to the summer, and once you get there you know your status, and that’s how you’re going to move forward.

“A club like Everton, by hook or by crook they’ve got to make sure they’ve got that Premier League status.

“You’re never too good to go down, that is one thing that I do know.

“We’ve seen it with certain other clubs, people say, ‘Too good to go down’, next minute the trap door opens and they’re gone.

“Everton have got a good squad of players. Is it right? No, it’s not perfect, but they’re good enough to stay up. They have to.”

Everton

A perfect storm has come together on Merseyside as the free-spending owner has had to reign in his tendencies to satisfy the FFP rules, with the Covid-19 pandemic a blessing and curse, in that it robbed the club of a lot of income but provides a get out clause on a percentage of the losses on the balance sheet.

The Bramley Moore Dock stadium project has been in the pipeline or some years but is looming ever larger on the finances, and with the Russian war in Ukraine leading to the necessary severing of ties with their major supporter it is all looking touch and go.

And the team on the pitch to on the brink of disaster and threatening to drop out of the top flight for the first time since the break-away league was formed in 1992, to provide the cherry on top of a disastrous cake.

In other Everton news, Graeme Souness has laid into Farhad Moshiri for having his “trousers taken down”.
