Kevin Campbell: Everton can beat Newcastle, have to after others picked up results

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell is concerned to see other teams picking up points but sees an opportunity to do the same against Newcastle.

Defeat against Wolves at the weekend leaves Frank Lampard’s side outside of the relegation zone on goal difference, after a day when Leeds and Watford were both victorious.

There is significant pressure on the visit of Eddie Howe’s men, especially with the focus on home games, and the remaining fixtures.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said of the situation: “They’re right in a tough battle, and when you really look at it, look at all the other teams – Watford getting a result down the bottom there, Leeds have just got a result, Brentford have won a few and taken themselves virtually out of the equation.

“I just think Everton need to get a win from somewhere, that’s the key.

“They’re at home with the twelfth man with them, although Newcastle have been going great and they gave Chelsea as much as they could handle.

“I think Everton really need to get their own house in order and not worry about anybody else.

“For me, I think Everton can with the game, no game is the same.

“And Newcastle are one of those teams now where they’re going to take risks. They’re looking to win games, they’re not just looking to hang on in games.

“So I think it’s going to be a really interesting game, a tough game, but an interesting one, and one I believe Everton can win.”

Newcastle are a different proposition from what they were prior to the transfer window, as nearly £100million worth of players arrived in January.

They’ve subsequently climbed away from relegation danger, leaving the Toffees languishing behind them.

With Lampard struggling to get goals out of his team, this could be a blessing in disguise, although the issues in defence are certainly still a worry.
