Everton ace Ben Godfrey delights Rio Ferdinand in 1-0 win v Newcastle

Everton took a huge step to securing their Premier League safety for another season last night with a stunning last-gasp win against Newcastle.

Alex Iwobi appeared in the 99th minute of the game to convert Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s layoff for the game’s only goal to pick up a vital three points for the Toffees.

The result takes them three points clear of the relegation zone with just 11 games to play after a herculean effort in defence to repel the inform Magpies attack.

Former Manchester United and England defender turned BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand was very impressed by what he saw from Everton defender Ben Godfrey and was sure to let him know on Twitter after the game.

Godfrey had already posted about his delight on his own Twitter account and the ex-three lions star replied with a strong-arm emoji to acknowledge his countryman’s fine work at the back.

Frank Lampard may never have a bigger and more important result in his entire career at Everton than last night’s win.

The victory would have been enough but in the manner it came, with a last-minute winner, it will go down as one of the great wins in his entire football career, including his playing days where he was winning trophies with Chelsea.

One thing you can guarantee is that you wouldn’t have seen that level of emotion from former manager Rafael Benitez and that alone has justified the club’s decision to give him the boot in favour of Lampard.

The Toffees are far from out of the woods yet but these three points do make their situation a lot less bottom-clenching.
