Kevin Campbell wants to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison shoulder the burden for Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has assessed the struggle for goals in the Everton team, and believes the team’s big-money pair up front have to do more.

Alex Iwobi scored the only goal of the game in the valuable victory against Newcastle, but it meant that the Brazilian still only has five goals this season, and the English striker hasn’t scored since a three-game stretch to open the campaign.

Prior to the strike against Eddie Howe’s side, a Salomon Rondon brace against Boreham Wood was the sum total of the attacking output in over a month.

“I’d like to think Demarai Gray and Anthony Gordon.

“But what I don’t want to do is rely on wide players, I think your two main strikers have to be the ones who carry the team.

“And [especially] if you’ve got Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin.

“As a striker myself, you want that burden to be able to shoot yourself out of trouble.

“So can Demarai Gray and Anthony Gordon etc. help? Doucoure etc. in midfield, can they chip in? Yes.

“But really you’re looking at your main front two who one’s valued at £60, 70, 80million, and Richarlison’s been talked about as maybe the same or going on to £100million.

“You’re talking a lot of money for the front two, they’re the ones who really should be putting the team on their shoulders and doing the business.”

One was enough on Thursday (17 March) but with more points vital in the fight against relegation, goals are going to have to start flowing at a better rate than they have been.

In other Everton news, Keith Hackett says Craig Pawson should have told VAR Stuart Attwell to “get lost” over the Allan red card.
