Everton protestor incident was funded by Forest Green chairman Dale Vince

Last Thursday saw Everton secure a late 1-0 win at home to Newcastle United but the game will be remembered for a completely different event.

In the second half, a protestor from ‘Just Stop Oil’ managed to break onto the Goodison Park pitch and tie himself to the goalpost and stewards to a long time releasing him.

The protest took up a large part of the game and Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince has today revealed that he accidentally funded this protest.

“It’s (the funding) me, actually. I had a chat a few weeks ago with the people who founded this. They reached out and they said they were starting up a new campaign and needed help with a bit of cash, so I did,” Vince said on talkSPORT.

“What they didn’t say to me was that they were planning to disrupt football matches, which I find amusing. I only bumped into this story in the last couple of days anyway – the fact that disruption had taken place – because I’m more interested in League Two.

“But it’s amusing to me that I actually seem to have my fingerprints on this accidentally. I’m accidentally funding the disruption of Premier League games.”

Good intentions, poor execution

As a chairman of a professional football club, Vince has to know better than that.

He should be fully aware that you have to dig deep into where your money is going before being so blase about handing it over.

Had he dug just that little bit further he would have probably found out about their disruptive plans and he would have surely pulled the plug on the deal.

Ultimately, it hasn’t cost anything to Everton and it is a cause worth taking note of but the way they have gone about their protests is completely wrong and Vince is a part of their failure.

You can’t imagine the Forest Green Rovers chairman will be welcomed with open arms at Goodison Park anytime soon after what he did regardless of if he meant it or not.
