View: Everton lose best player this season after Andros Townsend injury

Everton may have lost their best player this season following the injury to Andros Townsend in the FA Cup quarterfinal against Crystal Palace.

The Blues winger came off just 16 minutes into play, clearly in some pain, having sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury.

Despite joining the club on a free transfer at the start of the season, the former Crystal Palace man has been the most effective player for the Toffees.

His tally of seven goals and four assists in all competitions this season is more than any other Everton player and him being for the rest of the season is a huge blow.

Get on with it

The Blues have really struggled all season long with injuries and it has had such a negative impact on performances.

That is far from saying the club are in the mess they are currently in terms of desperately fighting for Premier League survival because of that but having their key players at their disposal would have helped.

Starman Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been absent virtually all season and even with him now back fit he is struggling to reach the high standards the Everton supporters understandably hold him to.

His absence has been out of the biggest damaging factors this season – if Everton had the 26 goals he had a hand in the last term they would be much better off.

Long term injuries to other key players such as Richarlison and Yerry Mina and now Townsend has left the squad a shadow of what it could be but even with that, the performances have been nowhere near good enough.

This is Everton football club and they have to deal with whatever is thrown their way. There will be no excuse for relegation, at all, so hopefully, Lampard turns things around before the end of the season.
