Victor Anichebe hails Everton ‘boy wonder’ Anthony Gordon after England U21 goal

Everton might not have played this weekend but that wasn’t going to stop starlet Anthony Gordon from scoring on the big stage once again.

The 21-year-old scored his third goal for England Under-21s in as many caps as the young Three Lions stormed past Andorra 4-1 at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth.

The homegrown Everton ace drifted in space at the back post to wallop a sumptuous volley into the far corner to complete the scoring for Aidy Boothroyd’s side as they maintained their unbeaten start to European Under-21 qualifying.

Former Toffees striker Victor Anichebe loved what he saw from the youngster and sent his praise to Gordon via Instagram.

The Nigerian wrote just two words to the Evertonian, saying: “boy wonder” as Toffees Under-23 stars Lewis Dobbin and Tyler Onyango also responded to Gordon’s post.

Southgate beware

It might not be long before we’re talking about Gordon as a full England international rather than just an Under-21.

He is the standout talent in this Everton team right now and very few are even coming close to performing at his level as Frank Lampard’s side fight for Premier League survival.

The Three Lions manager will be more than aware of his rapid rise to stardom in the world’s toughest league and he could be swayed into selecting him if some of Gordon’s teammates give him the hint.

Jordan Pickford started last night against Switzerland and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another who has regularly featured in Southgate’s squads although his injury saw him miss out this time.

Ben Godfrey has also been selected for squads before and all of them should be nudging the boss towards selecting Gordon for the next batch of games in June.

In other Everton news, Venezuelan newspapers have been reacting to Salomon Rondon’s display for the national team after being subbed off yesterday.
