Chris Sutton delivers interesting view on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been outstanding for both club and country, but Chris Sutton is not convinced that he is a guaranteed starter for England.

Sutton has suggested that only Declan Rice and Harry Kane are certain starters, while other positions in the national team are up for grabs.

Although he admits that Gareth Southgate has been “loyal” to Pickford, he thinks Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale has enjoyed a better season.

The popular pundit said to Daily Mail (printed edition, 28 March – page 67): “There is competition everywhere in this England team. I would say there are only two certain starters for Qatar 2022 right now and they are Declan Rice and Harry Kane. Otherwise, it’s a free-for-all.

“That includes in goal. We know Southgate feels loyal to Jordan Pickford but Aaron Ramsdale has enjoyed a better season for Arsenal.”

Interesting

Everton have endured a shocking campaign and they are fighting for survival this season.

Pickford has hardly put a foot wrong. He can’t do anything when the defenders ahead of him make errors after errors on a regular basis.

The 28-year-old was outstanding during the Euro competition, and he has done incredibly well for the Toffees this season as well.

With better defenders ahead of him, his numbers would have looked a lot better than what it is reflecting now.

Ramsdale has been really well for the Gunners this season. He is a confident keeper and brings confidence at the back. So, Sutton definitely has a point here.

However, in all probability, Southgate is unlikely to make big changes to his goalkeeping position, unless Pickford picks up an injury. However, he now has got two outstanding keepers and both are equally reliable.

The Everton goalkeeper is an excellent shot-stopper while his distribution remains a strong attribute.
