Kevin Campbell assesses Everton pair Andros Townsend and Anthony Gordon amid major injury

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell admits that it was a blow to Everton to lose Andros Townsend to injury but not a crushing one in the relegation battle.

The former Crystal Palace winger tore his anterior cruciate ligament at his former home stadium as the Toffees were knocked out of the FA Cup at Selhurst Park.

The summer signing is subsequently unavailable for the rest of the season, but former Goodison forward Campbell sees more in-form alternatives.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News Campbell said; “I think Andros Townsend’s been really good for Everton at times this season.

“Signed him for not a lot of money, but to see him go off with that injury is not great is it?

“But he’s not a starter is he? He’s someone who can impact that game, but he hasn’t been a starter.

“So it’s a tough blow but Everton have to get on with it.

“I think [Anthony] Gordon’s been excellent and has been keeping the likes of Andros Townsend out of the team.

“So the young lad Gordon is good, but it’s just unfortunate that something like that has to happen to Andros Townsend.”

It was a cruel incident for Townsend who has been one of the few to be classified as a successful signing on Merseyside over recent seasons.

The fact that he was a free transfer clearly helps in that regard, but he has not been a hindrance in the way that some have in the last few months.

He faces a long road back to full fitness, and that goal would be a lot stronger if his return to the first team was set to be in the Premier League rather than the Championship.

In other Everton news, the club are on a cliff edge and risk missing out on an “extraordinary” £10.4billion windfall share.
