Gareth Southgate could drop Everton ace Jordan Pickford – Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton has suggested that England boss Gareth Southgate should drop Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as the Three Lions’ number one.

The Blues shot-stopper has been a stalwart in the national team, helping them get to the semi-final and final respectively in the last two major tournaments whilst playing a crucial role.

However, the BBC Pundit called for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to replace the 28-year-old in-between the sticks.

Speaking on The Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “There are starting places up for grabs.

“I know he (Southgate) likes Jordan Pickford, he loves Jordan Pickford, but there’s a strong argument to say that Ramsdale has been a far better goalkeeper for Arsenal than Pickford has been for Everton.”

No doubt

You can certainly see why people would be calling for Ramsdale to be given a go in goal for England.

Admittedly, he has been spectacular for the Gunners this season, really taking his game to the next level so he does deserve a chance.

He will likely get it too with Southgate set to reshuffle the starting XI in what is an unimportant game against Ivory Coast.

A chance is all it should be though. Regardless of how he plays for Everton or even for England in the games that don’t matter, the former Sunderland goalkeeper comes alive every time he plays in a major tournament.

His heroics in the penalty shootout against Columbia made him an instant Three Lions legend and he backed that up in the 2020 European Championships with several immense displays.

There is no doubt he will be England’s number one going into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but hopefully, he can show the same form in a Toffees shirt on the way.
