Everton ‘hierarchy’ keeps Nathan Patterson benched amid what happened with Scotland – Sky pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Nathan Patterson’s time will come but it is not a priority for Frank Lampard, as Everton “hierarchy” keeps him on the bench says Kevin Campbell.

The January signing from Rangers has barely featured at Goodison Park, and made some strong comments upon making his return to the field on Scotland duty during the international break.

The 20-year-old said, via Football Scotland: “I have good mental resilience, I believe in myself and know what I am capable of. No one will tell me otherwise and I think that has helped me get to where I am today.”

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell played down the youngster’s claim, saying: “I think he’s still new. I think there’s the fact that there’s players with more experience there.

“Seamus Coleman’s been a warhorse for Everton hasn’t he? And he’s still doing a job.

“Jonjoe Kenny’s come in and done a job, although obviously he got sent off against Wolves.

“I think Patterson just has to bide his time, he’s only young, and the fact that he’s playing for Scotland is great for the young man.

“But at Everton there is a bit of a hierarchy. I think he will get his opportunity in the longer term.

“But right now, relying on a 19-20-year-old, who doesn’t really have a lot of experience so to speak, I just don’t see Frank Lampard putting all that pressure on him.

“He might have to if things go west, but I don’t think it’s going to be his first priority.”

Nobody can deny the service that Toffees captain Coleman has provided the club over the years.

But he has not shone in every game despite the odd battling performance, as the entire defensive unit has struggled badly on a number of occasions.

In that context it is odd to see the man that cost £16million during the transfer window failing to get a look in, but Campbell sees little controversy, and the young Scot looks like he will just have to wait.

In other Everton news, one struggling Toffee was “stripped of his dignity” before he arrived at the club.
