Sky Sports pundit dismisses missed Everton return for David Moyes after Alan Shearer interview
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
David Moyes had “unfinished business” at West Ham and there is no guarantee that he would have been successful back at Everton says Kevin Campbell.
The Scot spent over a decade at Goodison Park and faces his former side when the Toffees travel to the London Stadium on Sunday (3 April), woith him challenging in Europe while Frank Lampard tries to avoid relegation.
In a wide ranging interview with Alan Shearer for The Athletic recently the Hammers boss was said to be “very very close” to a return at one point, with the Premier League’s record scorer saying, “Everton’s loss has been West Ham’s gain”.

Campbell isn’t moved by that as he exclusively told Goodison News: “You can say that [mistake not to bring him back] but it’s a bit after the horse has bolted from the stable.
“David Moyes knows Everton. Everybody knows he did a great job at Everton, and I think he had unfinished business at West Ham.
“He’d been the manager, then he’d walked away, then coming back there’s unfinished business there.
“And sometimes you should never go back. He’d had a really good run at Everton, but I think the time was right.
“There have been experienced managers that have come into the Everton situation and done nothing.
“Who’s to say the second time around it would have worked for David Moyes? You just don’t know.
“David Moyes is doing a good job now but I don’t think you can put that on [Farhad] Moshiri.”

With the benefit of hindsight then most around the club would take the previous boss back.
If he could bring about the rejuvenation he has managed in east London then it would be a certainty.
But not many saw that coming, including his current side when they let him go the first time, and he was seen by many as yesterday’s man, so a case of what might have been was perhaps not a glaring error at the time.
In other Everton news, new drone footage from Bramley-Moore Dock has shown the new stadium beginning to come to life.
