Jonathan Woodgate slams Everton defender Michael Keane v West Ham

Jonathan Woodgate has criticised Everton defender Michael Keane after he picked up a red card against West Ham.

The Toffees lost 2-1 against David Moyes’ side in the Premier League on Sunday (03 April) at the London Stadium, and it’s a crushing blow to their survival hopes.

Keane was sent off midway through the half for his second bookable offence when the score was 2-1, and it became really hard for the Toffees to come back into the game.

Woodgate said on BBC Radio 5 Live as relayed by the BBC website: “It’s so rash from a defender who is experienced and has been an England international.

“Stay on your feet. Why do you go to ground? There is no need to make that tackle. He has just made it even harder for his team.”

Not for the first time

Frank Lampard really needs to make a big call on Keane in the summer transfer window.

The most frustrating part about Keane is that he is so inconsistent, and it’s hard to predict what to expect from him.

He is an experienced defender and a key player for the club.

At times, he has produced some exceptional performances, especially at home games this season. But he frustrates more than he pleases.

His lack of concentration and poor decision making has cost Everton a lot of points this season.

For instance, he made a calamitous mistake that allowed Phil Foden to score at Goodison Park to give City a 1-0 win. All the hard work of his teammates for the entire 80-odd minutes went in vain.

Here again, we see a lapse of concentration from him. Everton still had a chance to look for an equaliser after Jarrod Bowen’s goal, but 10-men it was game over.
