Everton Premier League sanctions ‘highly unlikely’ this season after major Tuesday news – expert
It is “highly unlikely” from a practical point of view that Everton will be sanctioned by the Premier League this season according to Kieran Maguire.
The club announced it had lost £120.9million in their most recent set of accounts on Tuesday (29 March), the third consecutive loss of over £100million, but claims Covid-19-related offsets keep them compliant with sustainability rules.
The University of Liverpool-based football finance expert believes that even in the event that the league decides the Toffees should be punished there is not enough time for it to be brought in until next season.

Maguire said on The Price of Football podcast: “The fear has been that there could be charges, that there could be sanctions, and those sanctions could conceivably involve points deductions.
“My view is we’re into April, it’s far too late to have such charges which would result in points deductions this season.
“By the time you collate the evidence, convene a committee and then come up with a judgment I think we would be into next season, and even if it was done quicker and the worst happened to Everton then they’d appeal.”
One threat lifted
A points deduction before the end of the season would almost certainly relegate the club.
That would clearly be a disaster considering the financial situation, as it would greatly affect their ability to earn.
The club is “adamant” that they are within the rules due to various reasons, including the new stadium development and losses permitted due to the unforeseen circumstances of the pandemic.

The losses of £373million over three years far outstrip the permitted number of £105million.
According to Maguire the club claims to have lost a vast amount more money due to Covid compared to other clubs, so it is to an extent their own projections which they think make them safe.
That may leave the prospect of punishment in the future on the table.
But at least Frank Lampard should be able to focus on trying to pick up enough points to keep the team up without the prospect of them immediately being taken away again.
