Sky Sports pundit shares ‘the difficult thing’ for Everton after £183million reveal
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Everton had no choice but to spend big on wages because they had to compete with big Premier League rivals according to Kevin Campbell.
The release of the club’s most recent accounts last Tuesday (29 March) revealed that the wage bill had risen to £183million, which finance expert Kieran Maguire noted on Twitter was an increase of nearly £100million under Farhad Moshiri, and amounted to 98% of revenue.
TalkSPORT and Sky Sports pundit Campbell accepts that wages are going to be high if a club wants to sign good players, but suggested planning on which ones to buy had gone awry.

He told Goodison News exclusively: “I don’t think it’s poor management. Listen, if you want to get good footballers to your football club, you have to pay them.
“They key is, and here’s the difficult thing, sometimes you’re competing with other clubs who are big, who are maybe in a better position.
“So what you have to do is you have to pay them well because if they go to any of these club’s they’re going to be paid well.
“You have to match what they’re being paid, so that part of it I totally understand, but as I’ve said before, you have to have a plan.
“The plan of what type of players you recruit, what type of money you pay etc. – you might have to miss out on some – but to get the right players in is so important.”

It has to be said that the club has tried to pay its way into the big time, bringing in the likes of Carlo Ancelotti as manager and James Rodriguez.
But for all the money that has gone out, the return they have got has been negligible, and this season it has reduced even further.
An expensive scattergun approach isn’t workable, but the plan that Campbell mentions has been conspicuous by its absence recently.
In other Everton news, a former player for both sides couldn’t understand how a West Ham man wasn’t red carded at the London Stadium.
