Gary Lineker reacts to ‘huge’ late Richarlison goal for Everton in draw with Leicester

Gary Lineker reacted to Richarlison’s late equaliser against Leicester by admitting he doesn’t want the Toffees to drop into the Championship.

In a clash between two of his former sides, the Match of the Day host had some split loyalties, and in those circumstances was not as unhappy as usual for his home team Leicester to concede another late goal.

The Brazilian made up for two awful earlier misses by scoring in the 92nd minute to salvage a vital point, after Harvey Barnes had put the visitors ahead early.

Writing on his personal Twitter account Lineker said: “Huge goal for Everton. Would normally be gutted with a late equaliser against Leicester but really don’t want to see the Toffees stuck in the Championship.”

The result leaves Frank Lampard’s side four points above the relegation zone with seven Premier League games left.

Last gasp

The late goal rescued what looked like being a thoroughly deflating evening at Goodison Park.

The early opener from the visitors quickly put a dampener on the atmosphere that has proved so vital to the team of late.

Time wasting from Brendan Rodgers side only served to increase the frustration through the evening, as a number of bad misses appeared to have thrown away any chance at taking anything from the game.

Late substitutes Dele Alli and Salomon Rondon helped make the difference though, with both involved in the leveller which was eventually scuffed into the far corner.

It was far from pretty but, as the manager claimed in the pre-match programme, it is results that are all that matters right now, and something was snatched from nothing tonight.

With nobody in the league confident of picking up any points at Anfield where the Toffees head next, it was so important to go into that game with at least something to hold onto.

There wasn’t a huge amount to like about the performance but the team kept at it to the death, and the forgotten men off the bench made a telling contribution.

In other Everton news, the manager made a heartfelt plea to the fans before the game, admitting he had “fallen in love”.
