Anthony Gordon takes swipe at officials on Twitter after Anfield defeat

Everton winger Anthony Gordon has taken to Twitter to share his disappointment with Stuart Atwell after he was denied a penalty against Liverpool on Sunday [April 24].

Frank Lampard’s side fell to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield but it was the officiating that took all of the headlines.

The 21-year-old was booked for diving in the first half whilst having another strong penalty shout waved away after Joel Matip bundled him to the floor.

Despite the encouraging display, the Toffees now find themselves in the relegation zone, two points behind Burnley who beat Wolves on the weekend.

Disgrace.

What on earth were the officials watching yesterday? Admittedly, there was minimal contact on the first penalty shout and it wasn’t a penalty, justifying the yellow card but that seemingly got into Atwell’s head the second time around.

The second incident couldn’t have been a clearer penalty and how Darren England on VAR hasn’t overturned that or at least told the on-field referee to go and look at the monitor. The favouritism that the so-called ‘big six’ get is a joke with Rodri’s handball at Goodison Park yet another example.

If Everton go down because of a series of disgraceful refereeing decisions then it would be a real shame but with that being said, the players haven’t helped themselves one but this season.

The fight shown yesterday at Anfield proves that these players are capable of putting in a strong performance so why haven’t they been doing that since Lampard arrived at the club instead of putting in lacklustre performances week after week.

There is still a long way to go but with them now in the relegation zone with so many difficult games to play, the Toffees might have left it too late.
