Danny Murphy hails Everton ace Jordan Pickford emotional maturity

Danny Murphy has urged Aaron Ramsdale to learn from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after his celebrations against Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has come under some criticism after reacting emphatically when Bruno Fernandes a missed penalty in the Gunners’ 3-1 win at the Emirates.

With the Blues stopper receiving similar “emotional” backlash earlier in his career, Murphy has insisted he is the man to learn from.

He told talkSPORT: “I always think when you get too emotionally involved you detract it from your own performance.

“I think you are losing the plot a little bit. I understand it, if I was his manager I’d be saying ‘don’t do that again’.

“Do you know who’s been the best example of reigning in that emotional aspect of his football is Pickford, that’s why he is still England’s number one.”

Matured.

Pickford has continuously been targeted by the media throughout his career and at times he really hasn’t helped himself.

The scrutiny always worsened when he made errors which at times was quite a common thing at one point but the former Sunderland man seemed to struggle to keep his emotions in check and focus on the game.

Going away with England and working with Gareth Southgate has allowed the Toffees keeper to really mature and improve his all-around game.

The Three Lions boss turned the once “hyperactive” liability into a calm, more assured presence at the back and he might do the same with Ramsdale should he ever usurp the Blues man to the lucrative number one spot.

Everton need to thank the international boss for the brilliant work that the sports psychologists did with Pickford. Despite not completely replicating his England success at Goodison Park, there is no doubt he is a far better goalkeeper.

In other Everton news, a BBC duo have insisted that the Toffees were “better” than Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.
