Rio Ferdinand believes Everton have been ‘unlucky’ this season

Rio Ferdinand believes Everton have been ‘unlucky’ at times this season and says the quality of their squad doesn’t matter if they don’t perform.

A 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday saw the team drop into the bottom three of the Premier League for the first time this season with just six games remaining.

But despite that, the former Manchester United defender suggested on his Vibe with Five podcast that the team haven’t got the rewards for some of their performances recently.

“Do you think Everton stay up? Worse goal difference and their run in is the hardest.

“We said before that West Ham were one of the best teams to get relegated. It doesn’t matter what you’ve got on paper, you’ve got to go out there and do it.

“I think Everton have been unlucky in a few games you know, where they’ve played well.”

Point made

Ferdinand makes a good point, because the performance at Anfield was arguably worth a point against anyone other than one of the best teams in the world right now.

Defensively they were solid and prevented Liverpool from having even a shot on target during the first half and were denied a clear penalty themselves too.

But they’ve also been horrendous in the seven other away games under Frank Lampard this season, where they’ve lost them all handily and the reliance on home form is awful.

Their final six games this season will come against Chelsea, Leicester, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Watford and Brentford and it’s going to be very hard for them to get a lot of points.

But they have a chance with their game in hand of catching Burnley and with some confidence and a similar level of performance for the rest of the season, it’s far too soon to completely rule them out now.
