Everton have zero chance of signing Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes

Everton and Wolves have reportedly no chance of signing Matheus Nunes in the summer.

The Toffees were heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old midfielder for a long time, but the player now wants to play at a bigger club.

According to The Record (27 April; page 10), Nunes has a release clause of around £50 million. He is expected to leave in the summer, but the Toffees have been ruled out of a potential move.

Back in December, the midfielder revealed to Record that the only offer that came to him was from Everton, but the deal didn’t materialise.

No chance

The Toffees really have no chance of signing him in the summer.

First of all, the Toffees are fighting for survival this season, and there is a high chance they could end up in the Championship, which is unthinkable really.

In that case, the club will have to re-think their long-term strategy and transfer plans.

However, if they stay up, it will still be difficult for them to attract top players from overseas.

Secondly, the finance is a big issue here. The Toffees have spent ridiculous money on players who have hardly improved the squad.

It needs to be a complete rebuilding and the club need to take a holistic approach.

With the financial fair play threat always hanging on their shoulders, and the club focussing their attention on the stadium plans, it’s hard to see Farhad Moshiri giving Frank Lampard (or whoever will be in charge) a huge sum of £50 million to sign one player. That’s unlikely to happen.
