Mark Lawrenson backs Everton to avoid relegation ahead of Chelsea clash

Everton are currently in the drop zone but Mark Lawrenson has tipped them to overcome their current situation with only six games left to play.

The Toffees will face Chelsea in their next Premier League game on Sunday (01 May) at Goodison Park, and they will be aiming to return to winning ways.

The home form has been their biggest saviour, and if they don’t start to get results away from home, they could very well be playing Championship football for the first time in zillion years.

Lawrenson, the BBC pundit, has a “sneaking suspicion” that the Toffees can avoid the drop.

“I think they did well for an hour against Liverpool, but I think Frank Lampard will be ok,” Lawrenson told Off The Ball.

“I have a sneaking suspicion that they might just stay up, but I think that might be more to do with the teams below them and the one above them more than anything else.”

Tough ask

Everton are 18th in the table with 29 points, two points behind Burnley having played a game less.

Leeds are also in the relegation battle and the Whites could be in big trouble if they lose their next three games against Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.

The problem for the Toffees is their away record, and if they cannot rectify it, they’re as good as doomed.

Lampard hasn’t picked up a single point away from home, and they have the worst record in the league.

They face Leicester, Watford and Arsenal away in their last six games, and if they fail to pick up nothing from these games, it’s hard to see how they are going to survive.

The Toffees have struggled with injury setbacks, while Lampard can hardly keep his trust in his key players to deliver.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is horribly out of form, and apart from Anthony Gordon, there haven’t been any stand-out performers for the club.

In other Everton news, Jamie Carragher has savaged the Blues’ “awful” owner, Farhad Moshiri.
