Robbie Savage believes Everton would be biggest club to ever be relegated from Premier League

Robbie Savage believes Everton would be the biggest club ever to be relegated from the Premier League if it happened this season.

The Toffees are two points adrift from safety at the time of writing with six games to go, one game more than closest rivals Burnley.

But with tough games to come and poor form under Frank Lampard, Robbie Savage admitted to William Hill that he believes that because of the money spent and the history of the club that they would be the biggest side to drop down a division.

“Massive clubs, Man City, Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, so many massive football clubs have been relegated,” he said.

“But I would say with Everton, in the Premier League era, almost spending nearly £1bn on players.. look at the managers they’ve had. Carlo Ancelotti, Ronald Koeman, Frank Lampard, David Moyes, they’ve had some very, very good managers.

“For me, with the fan base, with the history, they would be the biggest club ever to be relegated from the Premier League.”

Heritage

Everton are undoubtedly one of the biggest clubs in the country despite their lowly standings in the Premier League right now.

Their last league title came in 1987, just six years before the Premier League came to fruition, and despite a close encounter with relegation in the past they were playing European football more recently.

They’ve spent nearly £1bn on players and yet have got considerably worse, but that doesn’t detract from the fact the club is still steeped in heritage and history.

Relegation would be an absolute crisis for the community and the club, while the league would be a worse place without the Toffees.

But it doesn’t work on legacy and popularity, the team need to earn the right to be in the division. Everton are bigger than everyone outside the top six, but it means nothing if they don’t turn their results around in the next six games.
