Jordan Pickford has no relegation clause, could be priced out of summer transfer from Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford does not have a relegation clause in his contract and his £110k per-week wages could scupper any move away.

The Toffees stopper has been the key man in goal but with the club struggling against relegation, there have been reports that several top players could leave the club should they go down.

However according to a report by the Daily Mail, Pickford does not have a relegation clause in his contract which means Everton would need to pay his wages in full.

The report also states that no other club are willing to match his current wages and with top clubs currently content with their goalkeeper options, Pickford could end up staying at Goodison Park.

That could mean that he loses his place in the England set up, with Gareth Southgate unsure about whether or not to have a number one playing in the Championship.

Horror

Obviously if Everton end up getting relegated then they will want to keep their squad together as much as they can, but that could be a real nightmare.

Pickford’s wages would have him among the highest earners in the entire division and with the club’s current financial situation that is not something they need to be dealing with.

The player would hopefully be willing to take a pay cut to leave, or at the very least stay and fight for the shirt if he had to stay put, but ideally he’d leave.

As for his England spot, it would be short-sighted of Southgate to overlook him just because of the league he is playing in. He’s not a worse goalkeeper because of where he’s playing his football.

Sam Johnstone has regularly picked up call ups to the squad despite spending the season in the Championship, so it would be hugely surprising to see Pickford dropped ahead of a World Cup.
