Rio Ferdinand hails Everton ace Mason Holgate for performance in win v Leicester
Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Everton ace Mason Holgate after his ‘ridiculous’ display saw him score the winning goal against Leicester.
The Toffees moved out of the relegation zone and a point clear of Burnley and Leeds thanks to the 2-1 victory at the King Power Stadium, with a game in hand over their relegation rivals.
But the former Manchester United and England defender was quick to praise the individual performance of defender Holgate while speaking on his podcast, and also made sure the fans got their credit for the ‘massive’ result too.
“Massive result,” he said. “Mason Holgate for starters was ill the day before, he didn’t even travel with the team he had to go on his own, puts his hand up to play, goes in and scores the winner.
“Ridiculous. What they’re pulling out, the fans.. they’re fans need to take absolute credit the way they sung them through at home, this game [May 8] away at Leicester. The atmosphere, there was tears in the stadium, at board level as well.
Ridiculous
Like Lampard said after the game, what Holgate showed is exactly the type of attitude that Everton need from players in order to survive in the Premier League.
He was strong, quick, read the game well and took his goal well to get the club a vital three points that have seen them put their safety right back into their own hands with four games remaining.

They now travel to Watford, who have lost their last 11 home games in a row, knowing that a win will put them four points clear of the relegation zone with their toughest fixtures out of the way.
That winning goal against Leicester, which gave the club their first away win since August, could be worth so much more than just three points.
It could now prove to be vital in the race and rightfully the 25-year-old is getting his well deserved credit after a hard time this season that saw him struggle at points.
