talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose shocked by Everton as he makes big relegation call

Darren Ambrose believes Everton will be safe from Premier League relegation after they beat Chelsea and Leicester in quick succession.

The six points over the past two games have lifted the Toffees out of the relegation zone above Leeds and Burnley, while still holding a game in hand over both.

And the transformation in a short space of time has surprised the talkSPORT pundit hugely as he admits he “couldn’t see it happening” as little as two weeks ago.

Ambrose said on talkSPORT, in a clip posted on their Twitter page: “I’d say two or three weeks ago I had it as a shoot out between Burnley and Everton to go down.

“I knew who Leeds were playing, I knew Leeds weren’t in good form, but I couldn’t see Everton picking up the results they did, beating Chelsea then Leicester, I honestly couldn’t see it happening.

“The way they were playing, they looked low on confidence, they looked moody on the pitch.

“Massively turned it around… I think Everton will be safe.”

Growth

The change in the atmosphere around the club has been spectacular across the previous two matches.

It felt like the Chelsea game was a make or break moment, and with the fans pulling together to get behind the team even more than they already had all season the players responded by bullying the manager’s former side.

It still took massive performances from the likes of Jordan Pickford and Richarlison, but it was enough to inject belief back into the situation.

And that continued on to the King Power on Sunday (8 May), as once again the team rode their luck and had to be rescued by more outstanding saves from Pickford, but they did enough to pick up another vital win in front of a committed away following.

It wasn’t quite the backs-to-the-wall kind of performance that had been necessary to unsettle Chelsea and Liverpool, and it was alien to see the Toffees come out of an away trip with an important result.

But Frank Lampard’s side have put themselves in the ascendency in this relegation battle at just the right moment, with Leeds wilting and Burnley’s resurrection stalling against Aston Villa.

In other Everton news, one player stunned a pundit with his “unbelievable” and “sensational” involvement late in the victory over Leicester.
