Journalist Adam Jones reports Paul Clement reaction during Everton v Arsenal

Everton’s horrible season came to an end on Sunday which has left many questions for manager Frank Lampard to answer.

The Toffees managed to successfully avoid relegation but their journey in the season came to an end with a crushing 5-1 defeat against Arsenal.

Renowned journalist Adam Jones, in a column for Liverpool Echo, highlighted how Everton’s assistant manager Paul Clement was furious with the team’s defensive display on the set pieces, something the management must address going forward.

“One aspect that Everton have to improve next season, in particular, at both ends of the pitch, is their set-pieces,” he wrote. “Arsenal dominated the majority of possession in open play, but their goals actually came from dead-ball situations.

“Again, on multiple occasions, Paul Clement was rising from his seat to try and get a closer look at the work he had probably been undertaking on the training ground.

“Again, all too often he was left turning around with a mix of anger and despair on his face as he went back to his seat after seeing the Blues concede once more.”

Season to forget

Everton finished the season, where they had two different managers in charge, at 16th spot in the Premier League table.

The Toffees haven’t had a smooth sailing at all this season under former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, who joined the club last summer after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti who moved to Real Madrid.

Under his tenure, Everton played 22 games across all competitions, winning only seven and suffering defeats in 11 games whereas four fixtures ended in a stalemate.

His era came to an end earlier this year following a humiliating 2-1 defeat against Norwich. He was replaced by former Derby and Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

Under his management, Everton produced mixed results where they secured crucial wins under his management against Manchester United, Chelsea, Leicester City and Crystal Palace, which saved them from relegation.

However, the side also suffered some thumping defeats, including the one on Sunday which surely was a sign that a lot must be done going into the next season.
