“I just need to go play. I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure,” said Bergwign to AD (5 June).

“Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not my top priority. It would be nice, but what’s important is that I’m going to play.’

“I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there.

“I want to go and play somewhere weekly. It would be nice if there was clarity soon. My situation now has to be different.”

Must move

Everton must not miss out the signing of a top-quality player like Bergwijn and should make a move a move for him quickly.

His latest comments should give the Toffees a big boost to make a move for him.

At the moment, it seems Ajax are leading the race, it could get interesting if the Toffees come up with a former offer.

Bergwijn only started four Premier League matches in 2021-22, and he is keen to move elsewhere for regular opportunities.

One thing is pretty clear. He is not bothered about playing in the Champions League at the moment. All he wants is regular games, and Everton could easily provide him the escape route.

Bolstering the attacking department should be a priority for Frank Lampard, especially if Richarlison leaves the club in the summer window.

Capable on playing across all positions, Bergwijn has the required Premier League experience as well to make an impact at Everton.

At 24, his best years are ahead of him. In terms of sheer quality, he would be an upgrade over the likes of Alex Iwobi, Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray.

It remains to seen if the Toffees come up with a formal offer in the next few weeks.

In other Everton news, the Blues could be forced into a big sale as Alisher Usmanov’s name is mentioned in a transfer report.
