Everton branded ‘tone deaf’ by campiagner after signing £10million per year sponsor deal

James Grimes, the founder of campaign group The Big Step, has branded Everton “tone deaf” after signing a new club record sponsorship deal with Stake.com.

The Blues confirmed a deal with the online casino company on Thursday (9 June) despite gambling-related shirts sponsors in the Premier League being included on a government white paper that is expected to be published later in June.

With plans to reform the gambling industry, the U.K. government has branded the deal a strategic error with Grimes also sharing his view on the matter.

“Gambling sponsorship is unpopular, unhealthy and on its way out of football. So for Everton to announce this partnership now is massively tone-deaf,” Grimes told Daily Mail.

Silly.

You have to feel for the Toffees – to some extent – here because of their recent misfortunes with sponsors.

Their ties with Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov forced them to cut deals with Russian companies USM, Megafon and Yota with immediate effect amid the conflict in Ukraine.

However, they themselves chose to decline an extension of their deal with car company Cazoo in the hunt for a more lucrative deal and that is greedy, to say the least.

If Farhad Moshiri didn’t have enough on his plate as Frank Lampard looks to fix the mess of a squad to propel the Blues into a new era, he does now.

The Goodison Park chief will have a lot to answer for with this deal being frowned upon by many.

It is complete stupidness and he obviously hasn’t learnt from the catalogue of mistakes he has made during his increasingly shameful tenure at the club.
