Ex-Everton medical director pinpoints reasons behind terrible injury record at Goodison Park

Former Everton medical director Dan Donachie has highlighted the key reasons behind the Toffees’ terrible injury record in the 2021-22 campaign.

The Toffees have had a torrid season in terms of injuries with a number of first team players missing large parts of the campaign.

Nathan Patterson is still sidelined with the young Scot looking to return this summer and Andros Townsend is absent with knee lingament injury.

Donachie believes there are number of reasons for Everton’s rotton luck with injuries.

In response to a question on Everton’s injury crisis, the former Medical Director wrote on his personal Twitter account on Friday [10 June]: “I can’t speak about this specifically but it’s very complex.

“The primary factors are training load, injury history, inter departmental communication and power.”

Restructure

The Toffees torrid injury record is an outcome of a poorley structured club from top to bottom, which will hopefully be rectified this summer and going forward under Frank Lampard and Kevin Thelwell.

The footballing department is entwined with the medical department at any football club.

How training is prepared and undertaken needs to be aligned with the medical department to ensure the risk of injury is low.

Furthermore, if a team is playing a high-pressing, physical style of play then there needs to be an adequate recovery program to prevent further injury.

What is clear is that Everton’s medical team weren’t aligned with the footballing side of things this season.

It is not all the club’s fault as bad luck does clearly play its part and having the amount of injuries the Toffees had will have a negative impact on their league campaign.

Hopefully this summer the Toffees actively look to restructure all aspects of the club including the medical department.
