Jonjoe Kenny rejects new Everton deal, will leave club with three other first-teamers

Jonjoe Kenny has rejected a new contract at Everton and will leave at the end of his contract this month, the club officially confirmed on Friday [June 10].

Fabian Delph, Cenk Tosun and Gylfi Sigurdsson will also leave the club when their deals expire at the end of June, but Asmir Begovic has seen his contract extended by another year while goalkeeper Andy Lonegran has been offered fresh terms too.

Kenny had been offered a new contract but opted to turn it down, instead opting for a new opportunity elsewhere.

“Ahead of the release of the Premier League retained lists, Everton have taken up the option to extend Asmir Begovic’s deal for a further year – and offered a new contract to fellow goalkeeper Andy Lonergan,” the club said in their official statement.

“Jonjoe Kenny was also offered fresh terms but has decided to move on in pursuit of a new opportunity elsewhere.”

Shock

News to offer Kenny was a big shock to many at the time, but it’s an even bigger shock to see him reject terms and now he’ll leave the club.

Kenny was often brought into the team whenever there were injuries or suspensions in defence, and Lampard clearly trusted him enough to be at the club into the new season too.

However his decision should be respected as he doesn’t want to just become another member of the squad, but he wants to make an impact and be a regular somewhere.

Everton need better than Kenny in their squad anyway, but Lampard would have been expecting him to stay put and now plans must be put in place to replace him and ensure the club aren’t short in the new season.

Realistically it’s the right decision for all parties, it just took a diverted route to get to the right outcome.
