Kevin Thelwell doing excellent job of whipping Everton into shape

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell is doing a brilliant job of whipping the club into shape ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Blues chief has not long been in the job but there has been a clear shift in momentum as he looks to get the Goodison Park outfit back on track after Farhad Moshiri’s disgraceful leadership.

A host of players and staff have been axed from the Toffees set up in order to make room for fresh faces including 13-year-veteran Paul Graley, the Toffees’ former Head of Performance Insights.

Thelwell has wasted no time in trying to fill the position and the job advert will be music to Evertonians’ ears.

As per Liverpool Echo, it reads: “Data analytics and insight have come to play an integral role in football – and here at Everton we continue to look at how we gain a competitive edge on and off the pitch.

“We feel that by using data to extract insights we can improve player performance, prevent injuries, and measure our alignment to coaching philosophy.

“Due to this evolution, we have an exciting opportunity for a data and insight-driven leader to come and join us as our new Head of Performance Analysis & Insights.

“As Head of Performance Analysis & Insights, you will work closely with our Director of Football and will lead the strategic and operational development of a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary performance analysis & insights service across First Team and Academy.”

It is about time that the Merseysiders started to crunch the numbers and use proper data insights to make their decisions – this is exactly the direction they need to be heading in.

For far too long it has felt as if signings have been based on gut feeling and other crucial decisions have been completely off the cuff rather than being well considered.

A lot of that is most likely down to Farhad Moshiri and his dictator-style running of Everton but Thelwell doesn’t seem to be phased by the owner one bit.

He has come in to do a job and that is exactly what he will do and there have been clear signs of improvement already.

In other Everton news, the club are now searching for a new Loans Pathway Manager and have set a deadline for 1 July.
