Everton spending £20million on Harry Winks would suggest same old Farhad Moshiri errors
Everton have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s midfielder Harry Winks but it not a move that makes sense in this window.
The Toffees have been in the market to sign a midfielder after a difficult campaign where they narrowly escaped relegation, but in a perilous financial situation already, they cannot afford to spend big on an unwanted player from a Big Six club, as it is the same attitude that has been all too common under Farhad Moshiri.
As per The Telegraph on 7 June, Spurs want £20million to let the England international leave the club before the start of the 2022/23 season.

The North London-based club having recently signed Yves Bissouma from Brighton, which would mean that Winks is now further down the pecking order at the club.
Risky signing
Ever since coming through the ranks at Tottenham, Winks has divided opinion within the Spurs faithful.
In fact, some of the fans don’t even know what his best position is in midfield. So far in his Spurs career, he has played both as a central and a defensive midfielder under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
In the recently-concluded season, the England international played 19 games in the Premier League for Spurs, providing only one assist and collecting two yellow cards.
And tellingly 76% of his Premier League appearances came from the bench [Transfermarkt].

In addition, he has not been able to occupy the first-team slot for his international side as Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips occupy those roles.
Everton barely survived relegation under Frank Lampard in 2021-22 but they are not going to improve their midfield quality by signing a player who hasn’t had a history of playing as a first-teamer for both club and country.
The Toffees have already picked up one forgotten midfielder from north London in the form of Dele Alli, and while there is still hope that he will come good, the deal to sign him protected the club from a major outlay.
Shelling out £20million for a player who has little recent experience as a regular starter smacks of the attitude that got the club into the financial mess it currently sits in.
The difference this time is they don’t have that money to waste.
In other Everton news, one Sky Sports pundit has told the club they must “cash in” on an important first team defensive player while they can.
