Paul Merson backs ‘scapegoat’ Harry Winks to be successful at Everton
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks will be a good signing for Everton.
The England international has two years left on his current contract at Spurs but he has been told to find a new club [Sky Sports].
Merson, in a column for Daily Star, believes that the 26-year-old can rejuvenate his career by moving over to Goodison Park this summer after being treated as a ‘scapegoat’ at Spurs.

Merson wrote, “Across Stanley Park I think Harry Winks will be a good player for Everton, after being a bit of a scapegoat at Tottenham,” he wrote. “I think he even has a sneaky chance of gatecrashing England’s World Cup squad if he has an unbelievable start to the season,”.
“I think he is a good footballer who never got the rub of the green at Spurs. When Jose Mourinho was there, every time they lost, Winks would get benched.
“If Everton actually spend money on him rather than taking him on loan it will show the manager really wants him and the club really values him.”

Even though Winks considers himself a central midfielder, he can perfectly play as a defensive midfielder.
In the recently concluded season at Tottenham, the England international made 19 Premier League appearances and scored one goal. However, he has found himself only 19% of the time in the starting eleven for the North London outfit [Transfermarkt].
The best thing about Winks is his ability on the ball. He can pick out passes when he has time on the ball.
However, the thing he gets mostly criticized for is what he does off the ball. One of the reasons why he has never made it as a first-teamer for either England or Tottenham is the fact that he doesn’t have enough mobility.
Considering the lack of quality midfielders Everton have at their disposal and the departure of someone like Andre Gomes, the addition of Winks will be a good sign for the club, especially considering he has a lot of experience of playing in the Premier League.
