Dominic Calvert-Lewin considering Everton exit, club ‘desperate’ for him to stay

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been considering an exit away from Everton this summer, but the club are “desperate” for him to stay according to the Daily Mail.

The England striker missed the vast majority of the 2021/22 season through injury, but scored the decisive goal in the 3-2 win over Crystal Palace to confirm the club’s safety for another season in the Premier League.

But with the club in financial difficulty, the player has been considering a fresh challenge after reported interest from Newcastle [Telegraph, June 6] , Arsenal [Athletic, June 1] and Manchester United [Sport Bible, June 1] this summer.

But according to the Mail [July 1], Everton are “desperate” for him to stay and an exit is now unlikely after the club finalised the sale of Brazilian forward Richarlison to Tottenham in a £60m deal.

The 25-year-old scored 16 goals in 33 Premier League games during the 2020/21 season, but managed just five goals in 17 appearances last season.

Must stay

Keeping Calvert-Lewin this summer is now arguably the most important business that the club can do considering the way the window has panned out.

Everton knew they would need to sell at least one of Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin, and after last season it was obvious the Brazilian was the more likely candidate to go.

Now that’s complete, the club must focus on replacing him adequately but also with someone who can dovetail with Calvert-Lewin and work alongside him the way the Richarlison did, because it’s best for the team.

If the club can get the best out of Calvert-Lewin then they will be far better off in the coming season and that will only help his stock for a potential transfer away next summer if he still wants out.

But at this point Everton must put themselves first and hold firm for the rest of the summer to ensure they’re not depleted further and can avoid another relegation scrap.
