Robbie Fowler claims Everton can’t spend money without clearance from Premier League
Robbie Fowler says that Everton were forced to sell Richarlison to comply with Premier League rules and they’re not out of the woods yet.
The Toffees confirmed the sale of Brazilian forward Richarlison to Premier League rivals Tottenham in a £60m deal earlier this month, but have yet to spend any money in the transfer window with only James Tarkowski confirmed as arriving on a free transfer.
Now Fowler, who has worked with BT Sport as a pundit and was writing for The Mirror in his column [July 10], claims he has been told by people well connected with the club that life has been “difficult” for the club in the window and it’s not looking like getting any easier soon.

“I think Everton will be watching closely too,” he said. “They definitely had ambitions to break into the top six, and were back not just by a billionaire owner, but by a sponsor in Farhad Moshiri who was amongst the world’s wealthiest people.
“I don’t know the ins and outs of what has happened there, but I know plenty of people connected to the club, and they all tell me the same thing, the talks with the Premier League over the profit and sustainability rules have made life difficult in the transfer market.
“The way I understand it, and I could be wrong, is that they’ve had to run everything by the Premier League, and that is why Richarlison was sold – to balance the books and avoid punishments.
“I don’t think they are out of the woods yet, either, I don’t think they can simply resume spending now, without clearance from the league. So they will be watching the Newcastle situation like a hawk.”
Trouble
Fans had been hopeful that the club was out of trouble after the 2021/22 season, but it seems that may have just been the beginning of their problems.

Financially the club is in turmoil, and if what Fowler has been told is true then it’s only going to make the upcoming 2022/23 season even tougher to endure for the players, staff and fans.
Improvements on the squad are obviously needed, especially after Richarlison’s exit, but the club seem no closer to getting anything done as we’re now just one month away from the start of the new season they need to start calling on favours and loyalty.
If Frank Lampard isn’t given money to spend to reinvigorate the squad and bolster his options, then last year’s relegation battle is a sign of things to come under the Moshiri ownership.
Something has to change, and fast, or the club will be suffering for many years because of the incompetency of the board in recent years and their mega-spending that has produced absolutely nothing for Everton.
