Signing Japhet Tanganga will solve Everton defensive problems for a long time

Everton are one of the four clubs interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga this summer, according La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The newspaper in its print edition on July 17 (page three), reported that the Toffees are competing with the likes of AC Milan, Valencia and Brentford.

The former England U21 international has three years left on his deal and it is believed that he is eager to leave the club to get more first-team minutes under his belt.

The Merseyside club have been rather slow in the transfer market thus far where they have only signed veteran centre-back James Tarkowski on a free.

Young Defender

Tanganga has been on the lips of every Tottenham Hotspur fan since former manager Jose Mourinho promoted him to the first team.

One of the reasons why the Portuguese manager promoted him in the first team was because of his ability to play in multiple positions, which was a necessity for Tottenham during that time as they had an injury crisis in defence.

Tanganga has played most of his matches as a right-back. However, he can also occupy the defensive midfield position and the centre-back role.

However, you cannot determine the potential of any youngster if he is not given any minutes to maximize his potential.

In the 2021-22 season, the 23-year-old only made 11 Premier League appearances. Despite the lack of minutes, he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 2.7 clearances per game and had a rating of 6.52, according to Whoscored.

Everton had many defensive problems last season when they finished with a fifth-worst defensive record in the Premier League and conceded 66 goals.

Signing a young defender like Tanganga, who at least has 10 years in him to play at the highest level, will be a great addition to the squad and something the club’s top-tier management should try to conclude in the near future.
