Everton want to sign Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez

Everton have made an approach for Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez as they look to bolster their squad, according to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo.

The Toffees are keen to strengthen their side after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, but have so far only brought in James Tarkowski on a free transfer this summer.

But according to the Argentine journalist, writing on his personal Twitter account, the club have approached the 28-year-old to see if he’d be interested in a move.

No formal offer has yet been made to Betis and it’s unclear how much the club would demand to sell the player, who has a contract that runs until 2024.

A further report by Diario des Sevilla [July 25] suggests however that Betis would want a “significant financial injection” for a player they signed in January 2020 for just £2.7m.

Profile

Everton have been in the market to strengthen their midfield options and it seems as though Lampard has identified the experienced South American to hold the fort.

A defensive machine, Rodriguez is very good at breaking up the play at the base of midfield and his tackling is among his greatest strengths.

He’s also comfortable on the ball and could help Everton to be able to control games more while providing a great foundation to defend from too.

Alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure the team would have excellent balance and that would free up the attackers at the club to have a bit more freedom to do damage to the opposition.

It would be a shrewd bit of business depending on the final price, and it’s still incredibly early doors for any deal, but it’s a positive step to strengthening the squad.
