West Ham want to sign Everton centre-back Mason Holgate

Everton centre-back Mason Holgate is now on the transfer radar of West Ham United, according to 90min.

The Hammers have been active in the market to sign players to strengthen different departments and have already signed centre-back Nayef Aguerd.

However, as per the latest report, due to an injury to the 26-year-old, the Irons are now evaluating the possibility of making a move for Holgate, with contact made.

Backup Option

Undoubtedly Everton’s biggest weakness last season was their defence. They conceded 66 goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season and had a goal difference of -23.

It is because of this reason they’ve already signed centre-back James Tarkowski on a free after his contract came to an end with Burnley and left-back Rúben Vinagre on loan.

However, it still feels like it is not enough to address the issues the Merseyside club had in the previous campaign and therefore, by all accounts, selling a player as young as Holgate, that too a league rival in West Ham, will be a serious blow for the team’s chances next season.

Everton

The 25-year-old has been an Everton player since the summer of 2015 when he moved from Barnsley FC in a deal worth £1.2 million.

Since then, Holgate has played 140 times for the Toffees across all competitions where he has managed to score five times and provided five assists as well [Transfermarkt].
