Sky Sports pundit would be delighted if Everton could steal in for Memphis Depay after approach

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

It would be a “really good move” if Everton could “nick” Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The Dutch international is set to leave the Nou Camp amid all sorts of transfer madness with the Catalan giants, and SPORT reported in their print edition on 6 August that the Toffees were one of the sides to make an approach, with a goalscorer badly needed after the sale of Richarlison and injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Thanks to the financial void at Barca they appear to need him to leave as a priority so Sky Sports pundit Campbell believes it would be an absolute steal if Everton could do a deal that brought him in with minimal outlay.

He exclusively told Goodison News: “He’s a good player. He’s very technically gifted, very good player. Kind of moved off from wide to middle and has been doing a really good job.

“He’s strong. He’s got great ability and he can score a goal.

“So if they can get him, and if I’m not mistaken he’ll either go for really cheap or nearly a free, so if you could pick him up for next to nothing virtually and he’s willing to come, that’s the other thing.

“Because if he becomes available there’ll be a lot of other clubs looking at him.

“I think that could be a really good move for Everton if they can nick him, yeah.”

Departed talisman Richarlison hasn’t been replaced this summer, and the situation at the position has only got worse since, so Depay, as a versatile forward who scores goals could be relatively close to a like-for-like substitute.

Juventus appear to be making a play for the 28-year-old but it is not yet a done deal, and given the current situation at Goodison he would essentially be handed the reins of the Toffees attack.

Somebody needs to be sourced fast before too many games go by without a viable front-man, and the former Manchester United flop has since shown plenty of quality so it would be an exciting one, as Kevin Thelwell appears to be looking to the Championship.
