Everton could now sign Michy Batshuayi for free as Chelsea ramp up Anthony Gordon pursuit

By Sean Clifford.

Everton could sign Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi on a free transfer in part exchange for Anthony Gordon moving to Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Chris Smith

The journalist has reported that Chelsea are likely willing to use Belgian international as part of a player-plus-cash deal to secure Gordon after failing with an initial £40million bid, as reported by ESPN.

Smith also reported that Batshuayi already has an agreement with Wolves over a potential transfer, which has been put on hold from Chelsea in light of interest from the Toffees.

Speaking on Twitter, the journalist shared the latest developments in the transfer saga, with a potential cut-price deal for Billy Gilmour also on the cards.

Conflicting feelings for Everton?

Gordon is a much-loved player by Everton supporters and the management staff due to his creativity and desire to get at opposition defenders, alongside being a boyhood fan of the club.

Following the loss of Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur, it is almost unfathomable on one hand that Everton would let go of their prize attacking asset to a league rival, leaving them with even fewer options across the forward line.

That being said, the potential offer of big money for Gordon could help the club to reinvest financially, opening the door to potential new arrivals coming in the door.

Signing a striker of Batshuayi’s quality on a free transfer would also address a huge striker-filled hole at the club. Everton will also need to be wary, as Wolves wait in the wings with interest in his services.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury in training has left just Salomon Rondon as the only fit striker by the club, who it’s fair to say isn’t universally fancied by many as the answer to Everton’s goalscoring concerns.

He has also played for some big clubs in his career, with Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, and Olympique Marseille present in his career history.

Everton need as many striking options as they can get, which will create a conflicting situation for Frank Lampard that he will need to weigh up carefully.

Nobody wants to see Gordon go; however, it remains to be seen what will happen as Chelsea continues to firm up their interest in the 21-year-old.
