Everton squad visited by Kevin Thelwell after 1-1 draw v Nottingham Forest

Everton put their first point of the Premier League season on the board on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest.

Brennan Johnson looked to have won the game for the newly-promoted Reds but Demarai Gray latched onto a long ball from Jordan Pickford to slot home the equaliser late in the day.

Frank Lampard’s side perhaps was the more deserving of a victory though and director of football Kevin Thelwell made a surprise appearance in the dressing room after the game, according to the Liverpool Echo.

It is highly unusual for such an occurrence to happen but Thelwell remained with the squad for a good 20 minutes including Andre Gomes and Ben Godfrey who watched from the stands due to injuries.

The Toffees are able to forget the league for a brief moment on Tuesday as they head to Highbury to take on League One Fleetwood Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Unified

There has been a fractious relationship between those at the top and those at the bottom within Everton recently but Thelwell looks determined to bring the club together.

The last thing anyone associated with the club wants or needs is friction within the closed doors of Finch Farm and if it takes the director of football showing his face in the dressing room to change that then so be it.

Farhad Moshiri can’t have told him to make that kind of effort having never done so before with his predecessors so this has to be his own decision and one that many will get behind.

But it could also spell problems for the Toffees because he could have headed to the dressing room to reveal that there might not be more incoming as many were hoping for.

Everton are likely to have to sell players before they can properly invest in more new additions but Lampard’s squad is already thin on the ground in terms of both depth and quality.
