Callum Wilson tips himself for World Cup spot over Calvert-Lewin, and he’s right.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin may miss out on a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England team for the Qatar World Cup after a series of injuries.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has tipped himself to join Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham as English striking options, at the expense of Calvert-Lewin.

Wilson himself has too suffered injury problems but if he can stay fit, should he join the England squad at the expense of the Everton forward?

Calvert-Lewin or Wilson?

Due to injury problems, both strikers were limited to reduced minutes last season, with neither forward staring more than 20 games in all competitions last season.

Both forwards have shown that when fit, they can be reliable goalscorers and attacking outlets for their teams, whether that is with Calvert-Lewin’s areial prowess or Wilson’s tendency to run defenders ragged down the channels.

The duo, despite suffering injury-ravaged seasons, both shared almost identical numbers in shots, shots on target, xG accumulated and pressures last season. [FBRef]

However, the Newcastle striker outscored Calvert-Lewin by three goals as well as having more dribbles and progressive carries than the former Sheffield United season. [FBRef]

When you take into consideration the season that Newcastle are threatening to have this year and you can compare that to the negativity that surrounds the Toffees at the moment, it is not good reading for Calvert-Lewin.

If Wilson has a good start to the season, alongside Calvert-Lewin struggling for fitness and goals, he will leave Gareth Southgate with a big decision to make this winter.
