Paul Merson tips Everton winger Anthony Gordon to not join Chelsea because of ‘money’

Paul Merson believes that Everton star Anthony Gordon must not move to Chelsea because of money.

The 21-year-old has been attracting interest from the London-based club who have already seen their first bid rejected for the player [Transfermarkt].

Merson, a column Sportskeeda, wrote that Gordon should not move to any club because of money because there are other factors involved, such as game time.

“This transfer window is going to be a hard one for Anthony Gordon,” he wrote. “He’s Everton’s superstar, in a sense, and he’s got his head turned.

“I think he’ll leave for Chelsea tomorrow morning if he has the chance. But I don’t think he’d play for them anywhere near as often as he could for Everton.

“Anthony Gordon’s a hero at Everton. He’ll play every week, and he’ll be a big fish in a small pond. Will he go to Chelsea to sit on the bench and not play? In a few years, we might be sitting here saying, ‘What happened to that Gordon?’

“On the other hand, he’d probably earn triple the wages at Chelsea. If he turns the move down, will he ever get another chance to play for them? This is an incredibly difficult decision. Don’t go by the money, go with your heart.”

Getting best possible offer

Everton entered the transfer window knowing that they would have to sign a number of players to strengthen different areas on the pitch.

However, one player who most of the people would not have expected to leave was Gordon considering how impressive he was least season and because of his overall development as well.

But with him so keen to leave the club, it will not be beneficial for anyone including Frank Lampard and the fellow players to have him around and therefore, it is important to let him go and get as many money as possible to reinvest in the squad where there are clearly need for more bodies, especially with a lot players leaving the club.

Gordon is a Toffee’s academy product and was promoted to the club’s senior team in January 2020.

Since then, he has represented his current club in 63 matches across all competitions where he has managed to score four times and provided eight assists [Transfermarkt].
