Everton signing Neal Maupay might see Anthony Gordon leave this summer – Jason Cundy

Jason Cundy believes that the arrival of Neal Maupay from Brighton might be the beginning of the end of Anthony Gordon’s time with Everton.

The Toffees completed the signing of the 26-year-old from the Seagulls on Friday evening in a deal worth £15 million.

Cundy, while speaking on the Gameday Countdown for talkSPORT, suggested that Maupay’s arrival might see Gordon leaving the club in the coming days.

“I just wonder if this [Maupay] signing might be the one that releases Gordon,” he said. “It might be Everton’s move before the move.

“He’s got a little bit about him as well where he annoys you if he’s playing against you. He can really get under the skin of opposition fans, which I really like about a player.”

Time running out

Everton entered the transfer window knowing that they will have to sign at least one striker to replace either Richarlison or Dominic Calvert-Lewin as both were attracting interest from a number of clubs in the country.

The signing of Maupay is a step in that direction where he is almost certain to fill the void left by the departure of the Brazil international who joined Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the summer.

However, if his arrival is linked with the exit of Gordon, it will be a significant blow considering that both are different kinds of players.

With less than six days remaining in the ongoing transfer window, it is about time that Everton’s top-tier management must make a clearcut decision about the future of the 21-year-old as letting him go at the 11th hour will be nothing short of a disaster for Frank Lampard and the club overall.

Gordon is an Everton’s academy product and has represented his current club in 63 matches across all competitions where he has managed to score four goals and provided eight assists in the process [Transfermarkt].
