Everton must score first to have any chance of beating Liverpool – John Collins

John Collins believes that Everton will have to get the first goal if they are to have any chance in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

Both teams will face off in the Premier League matchday six at Goodison Park (September 3), with Frank Lampard desperate for all three points.

Collins, while speaking on talkSPORT, stated that the Reds remain favourites for the tie despite their recent struggles compared to previous years.

“Well, obviously I think Liverpool are the favourites,” he said. “I think Everton are struggling and especially struggling to score goals.

“Liverpool, not the greatest start I’ve got to say. They’re struggling as well with injuries but still, you’ve got to fancy Liverpool.

“I just hope Everton gets off to a good start. Home fans are important, Try and make it a high tempo, try and get that first goal and get the crowd behind them. That’s the way I would play if I was Frank.”

Important

Everton’s start has been anything but perfect as they are one of the only three teams — alongside Wolves and Leicester City — to have not been able to register any wins in the league competition this season.

However, on the positive side of things, the Toffees have not suffered a defeat since losing to Aston Villa on matchday two back in mid-August.

Since then, the Merseyside club have secured three back-to-back draws against Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Leeds United. Two of those came away from home.

Therefore, the fans will be hoping that the players will be able to continue producing improved performances in the matches to come and help the side in securing their first win of the league campaign, that too against city rivals.

A major boost for Lampard would be the availability of new signing Neal Maupay who missed the Leeds fixture after not being able to register due to public holidays in the UK.
