Asmir Begovic reflects on Everton win v West Ham

Asmir Begovic has suggested that every player had put in an “unbelievable” shift as Everton secured their first win against West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday (18 September).

Neal Maupay scored the only goal of the match in the second half as the Toffees remained unbeaten in their last five games.

Begovic has also hailed the impact of centre-half duo Conor Coady and James Tarkowski, since their arrival in the summer transfer window.

“It was a huge team effort against West Ham, everyone put in an unbelievable shift and it was a well-deserved win,” said Begovic, as relayed by the club’s official website.

“We’ve probably deserved more points on the board but on Sunday everything came together and that was very nice.

“With the timing of the internationals, it always important to get a win. We’ll have a good couple of weeks [before Southampton] and we’re going to continue to work.

“We’ve got really great strength in depth, especially with those boys [Coady and Tarkowski] coming in.

“If you look at our centre-halves, I know we have a couple of boys injured, but we have great competition for places and playing behind those two makes it nice and easy.”

Momentum

The Toffees are heading into this international break on high spirit having remained unbeaten in their last five games, winning their last one.

This season is going to be different as there is World Cup in between, and so maintaining the momentum would be key.

Everton will face Southampton in their next game after the break, and Begovic has rightly said that the players need to keep their focus.

The new signings have definitely given them a big lift. In defence, the likes of Conor Coady and James Tarkowski have made a big difference.

Neal Maupay, another summer recruit opened his scoring account for the club after he netted against West Ham.

The midfield has been bolstered following the arrivals of James Garner, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye. Frank Lampard now has got plenty of options.

He will satisfied with the performance of young Nathan Patterson, while Alex Iwobi has rediscovered himself in central midfield.
