Manchester United shortlist Everton star Jordan Pickford as replacement for David de Gea – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United have shortlisted two goalkeepers including Everton star Jordan Pickford as a potential replacement for David de Gea, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Spain international is in the final year of his contract with the Red Devils but there is an option to extend it for another 12 months.

Romano, in a column for Caughtoffside, stated that United have not made a final call but they have two goalkeepers in sight to replace the ageing star.

“Manchester United will decide on new contracts in the next months, before January – nothing has been decided yet,” he said.

“For sure De Gea situation has to be clarified, but I’m told on both player and club side there’s still no decision.

“I think Pickford is a great goalkeeper for long term, while short-term Keylor Navas could be great opportunity for many clubs.”

Too important

Everton are going through a more than decent phase where they have finally managed to secure their first win in the league campaign in the match against West Ham United on September 18 [Premier League].

One of the reasons for the Toffees’ decent start to this season was the form of the goalkeeper Pickford who has already put in some impressive performances for the side including the one against Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby on September 3.

That performance was another reminder of why the England international is so pivotal for the club and therefore, the board as well as manager Frank Lampard must ensure that the player will not be sold, at least to a direct domestic rival no matter how good the offer is.

Pickford has been an Everton player ever since moving from Sunderland in a deal worth £25.65 million in the summer of 2017.

Since then, he has represented his current club in 205 matches across all competitions where he has kept 55 clean sheets and conceded 292 goals [Transfermarkt].
