Everton winger Anthony Gordon avoided ‘worst decision’ to join Chelsea – Trevor Steven

Trevor Steven believes Anthony Gordon would have made the “worst decision” if he opted to leave Everton and join Chelsea in the summer.

The 21-year-old is highly rated in the football community and was attracting interest from a number of clubs in the country, in particular from Chelsea [Sky Sports].

Steven, while speaking to the Liverpool Echo, suggested that Gordon is at the right place and has a “really good” support cast.

“Anthony Gordon is a natural talent that is still working out to be the best he can be,” he said. “We know Gordon can be that, it’s just a case of getting there.

“He’s got to learn stuff, cut some things out and add some things but his natural abilities are there and he’s got a lot to work with, plus he’s got a manager who thinks he’s capable of going a long, long way.

“He’s at a great place to be. I know there was all that hoo-ha about him potentially leaving the club towards the end of the transfer window but my goodness that would have been the worst decision he could ever have made in my opinion.

“There’s got to be right times and right moments for anything and the last transfer window wasn’t his. While there’s work to be done both for himself and the club, he’s got a really good supporting cast now and I’m feeling good about it and looking forward to what we can do.”

Everton entered the summer transfer window knowing that they will lose at least one of their star performers and that’s what exactly happened when Richarlison joined Tottenham Hotspur.

Following his departure, the Toffees had a hard time finding his replacement as Neal Maupay joined from Brighton.

No club can thrive by letting all the star players leave and replacing them with individuals who are not as good as the ones who went the other way. A good example would be Leicester City where the side is struggling after failing to replace the players with top quality.

Therefore, it is critical for the Merseyside club to keep hold of a player as special as Gordon who has all the ability to become one of the best in the league in his position.

The 21-year-old is an Everton academy product and was promoted to the club’s senior team in January 2020.

In the ongoing season, Gordon has two goals for the club in seven matches across all competitions [Transfermarkt].
