Sky Sports pundit would love Everton to sign Cody Gakpo but fears for chances

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Cody Gakpo is a “goal threat” and a would be a “very great signing” for Everton if they were able to bring him in says Kevin Campbell, but he’s not confident.

The Dutchman was interesting the Toffees in the summer transfer window amid heavy competition from the likes of Manchester United [Mail, 21 August], and Football Transfers reported on 30 September that they were one of the sides who were still pursuing a move for January.

But in that context Sky Sports pundit believes it could be a tough ask for Everton to sign a man who has starred this season in the Eredivisie.

Everton

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “One thing that he is is a versatile player who can play multiple positions. But the other thing he is is a goal threat.

“He scores goals and he assists goals. And if you can say one thing about Everton that they’re not blessed with at the moment, they’re not blessed with a lot of threats to score.

“So Gakpo would be a very, very interesting one, and a very great signing.

“But Everton won’t get him easy because there’s quite a few teams who are interested in the young man.”

Everton

With 12 goals and 10 assists in all competitions from 15 games this year it is clear that the 23-year-old is some talent, but he isn’t going to be cheap.

PSV failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage when Rangers beat them in the playoff round, necessitating the Dutch side finding significant cash elsewhere.

Gakpo is likely to be the source of that and means that they will be after a significant sum, which considering the Toffees’ spending power seems a tricky hurdle to clear unless Anthony Gordon is to be sold.
